Welcome to the FPV Freedom Coalition

The culture of recreational First Person View (FPV) flight has and will continue to inspire a new generation of model aviation pilots. These are the people who enjoy exploring the world through a new and unique perspective, the people who find solace in the world of flight, and the people who innovate new technologies to enable the culture to thrive. The FPV community has taken the knowledge of 80 years of model aviation to the next level, allowing for a more immersive experience with new and emerging technologies.

Community

During their time in the hobby, many FPV pilots have struggled with the simple task of where and when they can fly, as well as how to do so with the safety of both themselves and the general public in mind. The primary confusion comes from the mire of rules, regulations, and guidelines not only at the federal level, but at the state and local levels as well. This leaves far too much up for debate and interpretation.

Now, to further cloud the issue, the commercial drone industry is calling for further regulation to fill the skies with their equipment to the benefit of the companies’ bottom line. This leaves the recreational FPV pilot to wonder if they will even be able to enjoy their hobby. These are the same pilots that the commercial industry will count on to be their future, yet their first thought is to close down the airspace.

From the beginning, the FPV Freedom Coalition was created to advocate for recreational FPV pilots through education and safety guidelines to protect our access to ample airspace. Through this, we protect the ability of FPV pilots to fly and to do so safely, armed with the knowledge that they need to interact with the general public in a positive and respectful way. Together, we seek to unite the community into a single voice through which our concerns and needs can be heard.

Culture

Through comprehensive educational content and safety guidelines developed from both the existing regulations and common-sense standards derived from the community we seek to ease the pilots’ transition into the skies. The FPV Freedom Coalition brings that education to the general public, clearing the fog surrounding the community so that the community can operate with transparency and integrity.

The tradition and culture of innovation to develop and engineer new and exciting technologies for both the hobby and the industry relies on the community of pilots that FPV has brought together. This is a community calling out to be protected, calling out for a voice, and calling out for freedom in the skies.

The FPV Freedom Coalition is that shield, is that voice, and are the stewards of our freedoms in the sky.

In August, 2019, the FPV Freedom Coalition President, Dave Messina, was interviewed by Joshua Bardwell. Check out this YouTube video where Joshua and Dave discuss all things related to the FPV Freedom Coalition, who we are, where we come from, and where we go from here.

The FAA requires organizations who wish to advocate rules and regulations for recreational model aviation communities to first become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit as approved by the US Internal Revenue Service. FPV Freedom Coalition incorporated in late 2018 and gained IRS approval in March 2019. On December 14, 2022 we became officially recognized by the FAA as a Community Based Organization (CBO).
