Rob Robertson

VP, Public Safety Liaison

My primary focus in the industry can be summarized in one sentence.  “Placing [flying] robots in dangerous situations save human lives.”

Bringing 15 years of law enforcement experience, I supervise a team of 34 public safety pilots. I hold a Part 107 license, an FCC Radio Technician License, and operate UAS for NFL, MLB, and NCAA events.  I secured the first endorsement from the NFL for municipal UAS operations in stadium TFRs.  I also build and fly FPV aircraft and fly for recreational and commercial purposes.   I provide training and consultation for numerous public safety entities instituting UAS programs and I instruct at global conferences.  I am working on my Master of Science in Unmanned Aviation and serve as a member of multiple regional UAS workgroups.

I was the recipient of The Gunderson Award in 2022.  This award was named after Detective Eric Gunderson with the Washington State Patrol who gained acclaim for his integration of UAS technology for public safety purposes.  Gunderson contracted COVID-19 while traveling as a UAS program representative and passed in September 2021 after a courageous fight against the virus. This annual award is presented to recognize the advancement of public safety through the integration of UAS technology.  This award stemmed from purpose-built FPV platforms for public safety use.

My fascination with UAS began in 2016.  I built an F-550/DJI NAZA platform for media purposes.  This was the catalyst that led me to FPV.  I enjoy building and flying freestyle and cinewhoop platforms professionally and recreationally, and I am engaged in the local FPV community.

My perspective and experience with UAS in public safety, recreational, and commercial applications provide a comprehensive understanding of unmanned systems.  I am an advocate for using robots to conduct dangerous tasks, allowing humans to analyze data to solve complex and volatile problems.  Unmanned technology serves as an effective de-escalation tool that enhances safety.

I aspire to benefit this community for professional and recreational pilots nationwide.   I am an advocate for common sense legislation and want to be a voice for hobbyists, professionals, and public safety in this rapidly evolving industry.
