FRIA Application Checklist
The following checklist is designed to help you gather the information that is required to submit an application for a FAA Recognized Identification Area (FRIA).
Some Additional Notes
The FAA has told us that a FRIA is not intended for short term events or individual use.
The FAA will provide rationale for all denials.
Approved FRIAs are published on the FAA’s UDDS website.
FAA Required Information:
Primary Point of Contact:
Name
Address (Physical and Mailing)
Email
Phone Number
FRIA Location:
FRIA Address - If the requested FRIA location does not have a physical address, provide a nearby physical address from where the FRIA can be accessed along with written directions for accessing the FRIA from this physical address.
Directions to FRIA if it does not have a physical address.
FRIA Boundaries:
You have two choices here. You can either define the FRIA as a circle by using the location of the center point and the radius, or you can use multiple points to lay out a polygon shape.Circle ( You can use this website to help you get the coordinates and radius )
Center point latitude and longitude to 5 decimal places
Radius in feet
Polygon ( You can use this website or this website to help you draw a polygon and get the coordinates.)
Min of 3, Max of 10 Vertices
Must provide latitude and longitude to 5 decimal places
Begin list with Northwest corner and continue clockwise for FRIA boundary
Airspace Authorization(s) or Letter(s) of Agreement (LOA) - If applicable
Is the location a Fixed Site or Planned Fixed Site, or overlapping with a Fixed Site? Fixed Sites are locations where an FAA airspace authorization is needed due to controlled airspace at that location. So this would be an existing flying field in controlled airspace where you already have an agreement with the FAA to fly there.
Purpose and Need (15,000 Characters Max)
Describe to the FAA why a FRIA is needed in this location. If you have been flying in this location for a long time, please mention that as well.
Environmental Impact Questions - These are used by the FAA to determine noise levels and other environmental impacts of the flights being conducted at this site.
Estimated number of flights (FPVFC basis number of flights as battery packs flown)
Estimated length of typical flight (generally between 2-5 min for FPV aircraft)
List of aircraft (fixed wing, helicopter, multicopter) and propulsion systems operated on a weekly basis ( electric, gas, turbine )
Determine if Operations are regularly conducted at dawn or dusk on a weekly basis
Determine if Operations are regularly conducted at night on a weekly basis
