December 16, 2022. Malden on Hudson, New York. The FPV Freedom Coalition, Inc. has been recognized by the FAA as a Community Based Organization (CBO). FPV Freedom Coalition, an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization, has since its formation in early 2019, advocated for operators of small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) to fly where they want, when they want safely and responsibly in the USA’s National Airspace. The FAA’s CBO recognition identifies the FPV Freedom Coalition as an organization who will be consulted on structure, technology and regulations relating to the operation of sUAS flown for recreational purposes. In addition, the FPV Freedom Coalition will have the authority to apply to the FAA for authorization of FAA Recognized Identification Areas (FRIA), which allows sUAS operators to fly without remote identification capabilities when flying at the FRIA.
The FPV Freedom Coalition has been active in advocating for recreational operators’ rights. The FPV Freedom Coalition has participated in twelve FAA Advanced Aviation Advisory Committee Tasking Groups, joined the ASTM as a working member of the Remote Identification working group and has been accepted into the FAA-Industry, Drone Safety Team organization. The FPV Freedom Coalition also holds regular Town Hall meetings, open to the public to solicit input and provide updates on sUAS regulations. The FPV Freedom Coalition formed based on the needs of First Person View operators of drones and fixed wing aircraft. The FPV Freedom Coalition's continued efforts to secure the rights of hobbyists, while focused on FPV, has resulted in constant forward progress for all recreational aviation operators regardless of their method of flight.
